About the Game

BEBAS is a 2D horror side-scroller adventure where you play as Azri, a man who is beckoned by his nightmares to visit the abandoned old Changi Hospital, where he has to find out what happened there many years ago, when the Japanese occupation took place. Explore the old hospital, collect clues, and solve puzzles, whilst bypassing ghosts through various ways without getting caught. One thing stands throughout all this: try not to die.

Genre: 2D Side-Scroller adventure

Theme: Horror

Software: Unity, C#

Platform: PC

Target Audience: Teens & Adults

Main Role: Creative Lead

BEBAS is made with Singapore in mind. The goal of the game was to give a sense of atmospheric creepiness to the player while keeping the Singaporean familiarity. This was achieved with the setting is in the infamous Changi Hospital with remanence of inspiration from WW2 in Singapore along with the ghosts & legends in Singapore. Inspired by horror indie games such as Detention by Red Candle Games & Noctambulant by Justus Yew.

This game involves puzzles and ghosts that require different ways to bypass. With an interesting mystery in the story. The Narrative was told through the environment. Picking up clues that showed the story of the hospital. Each little clue further explains the lore of each and every ghost.

Main Mechanics: Walking around to collect items to solve the mystery around the abandoned hospital
Secondary Mechanics: Bypassing various ghostly figures using different methods.

Unique Selling Point: Horror based and inspired by Singapore

BEBAS is a project in Year 1 of Digipen Institute of Technology. In this project, we are teamed up with students from the Arts and Animation course. I was partnered with 2 artists to make this project.

My role in this project is the creative lead of the project. I was in charge of keeping the team in check and guiding them into the final piece of the project, upscaling and downscaling to make sure we meet the deadline.

Other Contributions:

- Game development and programming on unity

- Game mechanic & Puzzle creator

- Storyboarding & Narrative design

- Level Design

- Creating and scheduling meetings & documents for the team.

Production Journey

BEBAS was my first dabble deep into unity. Having never learned, more or less touch unity, the beginning was rough, given that there were only 3 months to complete this project from start to finish. But with the hardship came experience. Toughening up and learning everything on the job while managing a team would never be easy, but it was accomplished through trials and tribulation.

Bringing together 2 separate roles to come and work together was another trial in the journey. There were many problems, ranging from availability clashes to differing opinions on ideas. I learnt to overcome them by always checking in on my teammates. I prepared a large document that held all the details of the story as well as allowed my teammates to add a query which will be answered in due time. This definitely brough us together on the right path.

Overall, this project was an eye-opening experience on the difficulties of Game Design. Working with multiple people, learning how to keep the progress on track & learning to scope to meet deadlines. I learnt to be more assertive and coordinative while pushing myself in the process.
